Idiomy

I find myself becoming increasingly preoccupied with sayings. I am unsure whether advancing age allows you to appreciate any of the wisdom carried in anything the throw away sayings more than previously, but as I write this, having been thoroughly pissed off with the never ending conveyor belt of tripe served up by sports journalists (of which technically, in the loosest and most baggy and I mean XXXXXXXXXXXXL t-shirt baggy loose sense of the word I am) proves that indeed the Devil does make work for idle hands. This idiom rings true if you have a look at the BBC Sports SPL top headline from today (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/16420258.stm). If this headline had a flavour it would be Pot Noodle without the sachet of sauce.

When I look at girls dressed up to the nines the turn of phrase that flits through my head is “all that glitters is not gold”, having seen enough vaginas and kissed enough girls to know that make up is generally an allowance for something else that in the long run you’ll miss.

So is conventional wisdom overrated? Is it the basis of a robust enough philosophy with which to skip through life, relying on when apathy strikes one dull Thursday afternoon?

No.

But there is some delightful wisdom that you can use to kick your own arse into action. “A Stitch in time saves nine”.

And with that I shall sign off.

Happy New Year by the way, I promise as my New Year’s resolution to write more, pontificate more, speculate more and waste less time.

Throw us an idiom that can serve as a buzzword, poster slogan or spur to achieve those modest goals.

Oh, and I’m on Twitter (@TM9000).

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
